Youth Summit 12pm at the Library Aug. 30th

August 30
The You Speak! Youth Summit is an event designed to give youth the opportunity to voice their concerns about our community through various talents. They have 3-5 mins to do spoken word poetry, rap, sing, dance, or speak thier thoughts on the state of thier community. We want to encourage youth that they have a voice too and that it is them who will conceptualize what we will be as a community of Black and Latino peoples.

The goal of this event is to honor the talents of our youth and give them a chance to be heard. My hope is that from this event, the community leaders will have some idea of what needs to be implemented in the near future for our children and thier children to succeed.

To sign up or for more information please call 619-327-8846.

Creek to Bay Cleanup, April 26th, 9am-12pm, Emerald Hills Park

Saturday April 26. 9 to 12, 12th Annual Creek to Bay Cleanup.

Emerald Hills crew will meet at our Emerald Hills park @ Kelton Rd. and Bethune Ct.

All volunteers must sign the waiver form.
http://www.creektobay.org/images/stories/pdf/c2b_waiver.pdf

Q: What do I need to bring?

A: Please bring a completed waiver form that can be found on the Creek to Bay website.  It helps to speed up the check in process if volunteers have their completed waiver in hand when they arrive.  Volunteers may want to bring extra water or snacks, and should wear sturdy closed toed shoes and clothing appropriate for a cleanup.  Hats and sunscreen are also recommended.  To help reduce waste, volunteers are asked to bring reusable supplies, such as a bucket to collect litter, gardening or work gloves, and a reusable bottle.  Backup supplies will be available if you do not have any of these items.

 2014 Bling Your Bucket Contest

I Love A Clean San Diego invites you to show off your creativity while also helping us reduce waste at this year's Creek to Bay Cleanup!  To enter, decorate a bucket to bring to the cleanup and use instead of a plastic bag, take a photo, and submit to ILACSD at iloveacleansd@gmail.com within one week after the cleanup.  More information available on the contest entry form.

The following health and safety tips are from the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP). - See more at: http://sdusd-newsfeed.blogspot.com/2013/09/school-starts-tuesday-here-are-some.html#sthash.8qazb9Kh.dpuf :

Developing good homework and study habits

  • Create an environment that is conducive to doing homework. Youngsters need a permanent work space in their bedroom or another part of the home that is quiet, without distractions, and promotes study.
  • Schedule ample time for homework.
  • Establish a household rule that the TV set stays off during homework time.
  • Supervise computer and Internet use.
  • Be available to answer questions and offer assistance, but never do a child's homework for her.
  • Take steps to help alleviate eye fatigue, neck fatigue and brain fatigue while studying. It may be helpful to close the books for a few minutes, stretch, and take a break periodically when it will not be too disruptive.
  • If your child is struggling with a particular subject, and you aren't able to help her yourself, a tutor can be a good solution. Talk it over with your child's teacher first.
  • Some children need help organizing their homework. Checklists, timers, and parental supervision can help overcome homework problems.
