The Urban Land Institute San Diego-Tijuana District Council (ULI) is leading expert discussions of an integrated approach to planning and creating stronger, healthier, more satisfying communities for San Diegans of all ages, abilities, ethnicities and income levels.

The “Complete Community,” as described by ULI, is one that incorporates elements that contribute to the quality and character of the places where people live, work, move and thrive.   Elements that serve to create complete communities are most often beneficial to multiple neighborhoods.  Even so, it follows that some elements are uniquely suited to the conditions, needs and goals of specific neighborhoods; and that certain elements are key to economic growth in underinvested neighborhoods. 

Civic San Diego’s view is that completing neighborhoods will require the collaborative participation of multiple stakeholders (residents, property owners, planners, developers, engineers, environmentalists, business and philanthropic interests, social service providers, policymakers, government agencies, and others) to provide both professional expertise and community context; and to leverage the interconnectivity of a host of local solutions. 

The extent to which Civic San Diego’s community benefit goals can, or should be an element of a "complete community" strategy, is an important area of deeper inquiry.   Please join us on December 11 for a great program and discussion!

Fire and Water Info Emergency and Drought Conditions

As of July 1, 2014 the San Diego Fire Rescue Dept. has a pilot program in Encanto with a Fast Response Squad (FRS). It is a two person crew, one of whom is a paramedic. Known by call sign Squad 55, they can assess and treat a patient prior to arrival of an ambulance +/or fire enguine. It cares a small amount of water or foam to begin firefighting, but doesn't have the capability to attach hose to a hydrant. Staffing is seven days a week, 8am-8pm at 6135 Imperial Avenue. The Encanto neighborhood was identified as an area that is underserved by the existing fire station distribution. This is a PILOT program. If successful, it may be expanded to other areas of the city.

It's going to be another tough fire season with the drought continuing.

The You Speak! Youth Summit is an event designed to give youth the opportunity to voice their concerns about our community through various talents. They have 3-5 mins to do spoken word poetry, rap, sing, dance, or speak thier thoughts on the state of thier community. We want to encourage youth that they have a voice too and that it is them who will conceptualize what we will be as a community of Black and Latino peoples.

The goal of this event is to honor the talents of our youth and give them a chance to be heard. My hope is that from this event, the community leaders will have some idea of what needs to be implemented in the near future for our children and thier children to succeed.

Military Appreciation Event on Sat., Aug 9th @ Serra High School

Please join us for San Diego Unified School District’s Military Appreciation Event

on August 9th from 9am-2pm at Serra High School.

The event will include a resource fair, games, activities, prizes and complimentary BBQ lunch. It will be open to all military families within San Diego Unified School District.

New military families to San Diego Unified School District will have the opportunity to enroll their children in school. The enrollment portion of the Military Appreciation Event is for new students only. Students already enrolled in San Diego Unified School District that did not get their school choice or missed the deadline (February 15, 2014) will not be accommodated at this event, but are encouraged to attend the military appreciation festivities. 

If you are a new military family to San Diego Unified School District and want enroll your child in school during the event, please follow these guidelines:

• Appointments will last approximately 15 minutes
• Sign up for one 15 minute appointment per student
• If you have more than one child click "Schedule Additional Time"

Eat Smart, Play Hard

Summertime means school is out but healthy free lunches are still available for many of San Diego's kids.

The Summer Lunch Program provides free lunches and snacks to all children, 18 years and younger, regardless of income, at school sites, Park and Recreation Centers, libraries, military sites and community centers within the San Diego Unified School District.

“There’s no enrollment, no paperwork and no income qualifications,” said Gary Petill, Director of the District’s Food Services program.
