Encanto Elementary transformed into cool EnviroSchool

Birds, snakes and even Dr. Zoolittle invaded Encanto Elementary recently, and the students now know better how to care for their environment. 

"EnviroSchool" is a fun and educational workshop that features "scientists" performing a variety of fun and innovative activities for the students and student participation is part of the lesson.

The program, which took a full morning, starts Students were greeted by Dr. Zoolittle -- the San Diego Zoo's zany and good-natured "animal researcher" character. During his introductory assembly, Dr. Zoolittle used magic and animals to teach students about wildlife conservation and recycling through audience interaction and lots of friendly humor. Encanto students then had the opportunity to participate in three structured learning activities.

• The Splash Van: A mobile science lab featuring five different stations where kids use computers, microscopes, chemistry experiments and living creatures to learn about water quality and insect life. The lab teaches students the connection between human activities and the health of the environment. 
• The Green Machine: An interactive exploration program that teaches agricultural awareness at three stations: a soils research station with live earthworms, the water cycle station with dramatic role play scenarios and costumes, and an integrated pest management station with interactive role play and insect puppets. 
• Waste Reduction and Recycling Presentation, and the Recycling Relay: A hands-on presentation with displays of items made with recycled materials that teaches students the importance of waste prevention, reducing, reusing, composting, and recycling followed by a high-energy recycling race where the environment is the winner.

Eat Smart, Play Hard

Summertime means school is out but healthy free lunches are still available for many of San Diego's kids.

The Summer Lunch Program provides free lunches and snacks to all children, 18 years and younger, regardless of income, at school sites, Park and Recreation Centers, libraries, military sites and community centers within the San Diego Unified School District.

“There’s no enrollment, no paperwork and no income qualifications,” said Gary Petill, Director of the District’s Food Services program.

More Info	Community Garden Celebration Featuring Dinner & Outdoor Screening of What’s On Your Plate? Join People's Produce Project and 1 in 10 Coalition in celebrating our recent "WIN" at City Hall and the upcoming Mt. Hope Community Garden. The event will include dinner and an outdoor movie screening of "What's on Your Plate", a a witty and provocative documentary about kids and food politics.  Over the course of one year, the film follows two eleven-year-old multi-racial city kids as they explore their place in the food chain. Sadie and Safiyah talk to food activists, farmers, and storekeepers, as they pose questions regarding the origin of the food they eat, how it’s cultivated, and how many miles it travels from farm to fork. 6pm – Dinner & Drinks 7:30 – Movie $5 - $10 suggested tax-deductible donation. Your donation will go towards the same fund that willingly paid nearly $25,000 in fees to the City of San Diego to establish the new community garden ordinance. Family Friendly Event!!!
