It's been quite a busy month, and there's lot to discuss and learn about at the September 13th Emerald Hills Neighborhood Council Meeting at Johnson School (1355 Kelton Road). As usual, we will be meeting from 6 - 7 pm in the auditorium. (I noticed that the school marquee said the parking lot will be closed from 12:30-1pm, but I'm not sure why. Hopefully, whatever it is won't affect us in the evening)
- We had a Community Clean Up / Dump Your Junk/ Recycling Event on Aug. 6th
(tally of collections at the meeting)
- The Emerald Hills Community Picnic was held on Aug. 13th
- Several events were hosted at the Jacob's Center, Back to School ERAA project at Lincoln High, and students went back to school last week.
- We found ourselves in the dark on Thurs., Sept. 8th, and wondering if we were prepared for the emergency. (It was nice to see the neighbors barbeque-ing outside, and kids-a-plenty playing outdoors)
The only really nasty part of it- our neighborhood was the only one that made the papers for a problem.
(A carjacking using a semi-automatic pistol on Hilltop Drive, near 51st Street). At least the officers found the car, and took three people into custody!
- Our neighborhood is in the cross-hairs for a district challenge at the County level for redistricting.
We would be kept in District 4 (Ron Roberts), instead of District 1 (Greg Cox).
The modified option, called B-1, was adopted at the Sept. 6th Board of Supervisors meeting, and keeps Emerald Hills and Valencia Park in District 4, leaving District 1 as an area where 51.84 percent of the voting age population is made up of ethnic minorities. According to data presented by the staff, 43.56 percent are Latino and 8.28 percent are black.
The supervisors still have to approve a redistricting ordinance. The first reading is scheduled for Sept. 13, and the second is set for Sept. 27.
UPDATE (09/09/11): Following the special Board Meeting held on 09/06/11, “BOS Plan B-1 revised” is now posted to the online viewer. In response to comments and inquiries regarding a portion of Barrio Logan assigned to District Four, BOS Plan B-1 Revised unites all of the Barrio Logan planning area in District One. This is the plan that will be discussed at the upcoming Board of Supervisors meeting on 09/13/11. To access the online viewer click here.
CABLE TV/LIVE STREAMING:The meetings of the Board of Supervisors are televised live, starting at 9:00 a.m. on Tuesday and 9:00 a.m. on Wednesday. They are also replayed on cable television at 9:00 p.m. the evening of the meeting and on Saturday (Tuesday meetings replay 1:00 p.m. and Wednesday meetings replay at 9:00 p.m.). Please tune into the following channels: Cox 24 (South) or 19 (North), Time Warner 24/Digital Cable 124. Live streaming of the proceedings is available on the internet at www.ctn.org.
- With school back in session and political offices humming, I'm sure we'll hear from local representatives from City Council, County level, our neighborhood police Officer Jones, and several others.
-Lastly, President Gayle will share samples of her yummy rum cake at the EHNC meeting .
Hope to see you there!
Sally
